Recently, the Professionals CARE team sat down with John Walsh (President & CEO of StandoutX) to continue our discussion on standing out. As you continue to write your life story and prepare for your standout moments along the way, you will need a vision, goals, and a plan of action. Creating a ten-year resume is a great way to roadmap your vision of the future.

While there is no physical template for the ten-year resume, you must remember that this is your story to tell. Here are a few tips for starting your ten-year resume:

  • Self-reflect. Look back at your past and determine your successes and mistakes. Identify your passion. Learn more about your present self. What is your passion? What do you like and do not like? What are strengths and weaknesses? What skills do you possess? As for the future, ask yourself who do you want to be in the future? Reflection is critical as your past is the momentum propel your present-self toward the future.

  • Leverage LinkedIn. Use LinkedIn to discover profiles of individuals within the roles and careers that align with your future vision. Take a good look at their career experience and role progression along the way. You can even use this as an opportunity to network with individuals and learn more about their story!

  • Start at the end. Like a chess grandmaster, follow the trick of working backwards. However, do not spend all of your time focusing on the job title or company you want to work for. Instead, think about what your legacy will be. How would you want to be eulogized?

Remember, a ten-year resume does not prescribe your future path. The route to your future may change along the way, but the resume is the perfect roadmap to carry throughout your journey!
